"Radio" Plays

John Rearick, English Teacher and College Counselor at Poly Prep

9th grade

"Radio" Plays for "The Merchant of Venice" and "Master Harold...and the Boys"

The teacher uses technology to help students produce their own "radio" plays. After they had read two plays, "The Merchant of Venice" and "Master Harold...and the boys," the teacher asked students to write a play as a way of understanding the art form. In an attempt to make their dramas come alive, he asked the students to rehearse and record their plays. Students used a variety of different media including "old" tape recorders and new digital programs – GarageBand. The very heart of the aural play is using words alone to create a powerful image. Students were encouraged to enlist actors for their plays and to employ music, transitional sounds, and sound effects. The results were impressive -- students produced great work and seemed to have a better grasp on the elements within a play -- despite the occasional technological mishap. However, the teacher doesn't have enough time in class to devote to the playing of these wonderful projects.

Technology used:

  • Online podcasting tutorials
  • Uploading sound files to a website -- students would be able to listen to their classmates’ "radio" plays online.
